I’ll show you politics in America:
“I think the puppet on the right shares my beliefs.”
“I think the puppet on the left is more to my liking.”
“Wait, there’s one guy holding up both puppets!”
“Shut up! Go back to bed America. Your government is in control. Here’s Love Connection, watch this and get fat and stupid. By the way, keep drinking beer, you fucking morons!”
So, the Democratic party won the House and Senate this election season. I’m not surprised in the least bit.
I’m having a difficult time putting my feelings into words at this point, but the first thing that sprung to mind this morning after seeing the nationwide results was: We’ve just traded the right boot on our necks for the left boot. Big deal.
Cynical? Yes, of course it is.
Any political analyst worth their weight in dirt will tell you quite simply that the Democrats did not win this election. The Republicans lost it. They gave it away. They came to power in the early 90’s with their “Contract with America” and then proceeded to piss all over their promises. Sure, they got a balanced budget under the Clinton administration and a few other gains but that all went by the wayside shortly after that.
Why?
The answer is simple: The federal government has too much power. They control too much of our money.
There is much, figurative, weeping and gnashing of the teeth amongst the Republican crowd yearning for a more conservative Federal government in the aftermath of this election. I’m seeing continued attacks against the Libertarian crowd for “betraying” the conservative system by not voting for Republicans in this “oh-so-important” election cycle but that anger is entirely misplaced. The Libertarians voted to keep any boot off your neck, and off the neck of your neighbor.
The real answer here is to start electing folks to state positions with the balls to stand up to the federal government. This is the only way out of the fiasco we’ve been dealing with over the past 80 years.
Conservatives and liberals can argue until they’re blue in the face on the national level all they want but the fact of the matter remains that unless we return back to a government which honors state’s rights the national elections will be disproportionally important. In some elections the Republicans will be happy, in others the Democrats will be happy. In the end half the population lives in fear that the other party will seek to dominate every part of their lives that they do not wish the government to intrude on.
Some folks prefer the left boot on their neck, some prefer the right boot. This in and of itself isn’t a horrible thing, but it becomes a problem with massive powers are given to federal representatives with vast powers over the entire population. You end up with a “one size fits all” paradigm based upon the party that is currently in power.
This is wrong and must be rectified.
