Ron Paul: Vegas Odds

Posted on May 31st, 2007 in Politics by Justin

I’m not sure what to make of this, but as somebody that’s pretty much lock-step inline with Ron Paul’s views on government I find it exciting. It seems just a few weeks ago Sportsbook.com was taking bets on him becoming president with 200:1 odds. They’ve just dropped that to 15:1.

Holiday Weekend

Posted on May 31st, 2007 in Blogging, Personal Life by Justin

Sorry for the lack of updates — my personal life was a bit busy this past week.

The girlfriend’s sister, her husband, and their cute little 9 month old baby were in town. We spent a couple of nights in Macinaw City then a couple more at our place. Nothin exciting, but good times.

Update: Magpul PMAGs

Posted on May 30th, 2007 in Guns by Justin

I’ve made it to the range now with the magazines that I mentioned here.

All three functioned fine. I loaded them up with 30 rounds green-tip .223 surplus with nary a hitch. The weather was pushing 80 degrees and the rifle was a Bushmaster Dissipator. On the 3rd and final magazine I used it as for my fore-end grip and made sure to pull back on it good and hard. No idea why, just thought that it might trip it up.

Nope. No problems.

I think I just might go crush every other AR-15 magazine I’ve got in the basement. I don’t think I’ll be needing them anymore.

Magpul PMAGs Arrived

Posted on May 24th, 2007 in Guns by Justin

Three of the Magpul PMAGs arrived in the mail today. They look to be pretty sturdy, far more sturdy that the USGI mags that I’ve been using. I tried jumping on one and that didn’t phase it. Of course, after seeing this video I’m not surprised:

I haven’t had a chance to use them yet, that’ll hopefully come early next week, but they lock into the magwell of my Bushmaster Dissipator just fine. I can use the magazine as a handle and swing the rifle about without it coming free.

I have noticed that they won’t drop fre after trying something like that. I’m not sure why that’d be the case, but it’s pretty consistent. They drop free if I lock them in and hit the mag release without torquing on it though.

I’ll keep y’all posted.

Shotgun Project

Posted on May 21st, 2007 in Guns by Justin

Another old project of mine is finally coming to fruition. I snagged a Mossberg brand 18.5″ barrel for the Remington 870 (yes, you read that right) and I’m now finally putting together a nice short shotgun.

Way back when, again upwards of 3 years ago, I snagged an ATI brand folding stock for my 870 Express as well as a magazine extension for it. It was my intent to put together a handy little folding shotgun and then get an 18.5″ barrel for it. Well, I never got around to the barrel, and given that my 870 Express has been sporting a 20″ rifled barrel since the arrival of the stock I never had anything worth even firing.

Plus, a magazine extension on an 870 Express is a pain in the ass. Comment on the post if you’re curious as to why and I’ll clarify.

That said, the primary purpose of me putting together a pistol gripped, folding stock, 18.5″ barreled shotgun had one purpose: To prove to myself how damned useless they are.

Unfortunately I’m going to have to make a visit to the local Police Department before I can actually put together the beast that I expect to be utterly useless. I ran the numbers and the bugger will be 29″ long which, in Michigan, means it’s a pistol, which means I have to have it “safety inspected.”

The good news is that in the time between my original plan to put the bastard together and now I’ve acquired an old 870 Wingmaster that I use for trap. With a solid wood stock, good trigger components, and in general 100% better quality than the Express version this would make an excellent candidate for a new House Gun. It was previously disqualified for this because it sported a barrel of 28″.

Also, the magazine extension will work great on this one, provided I can find the damned spring that goes with it. That’ll give me, I think, 7 round of 12 gauge shells to work with, which is a great big step up from the current 9 rounds I keep in my 1894C as a House Gun.

The Steyer M95

Posted on May 21st, 2007 in Guns by Justin

About 4 years ago I bought a Steyr M95 carbine, which was recently presented on Kim du Toit’s site. The last time I shot it was about 3 years ago and I found that the bolt didn’t want to pull back after firing an cartridge. I shelved it after 5 shots, presuming that the ammo was just too damned hot.

Perhaps I was wrong, I thought, so I pulled the old lady out and gave the chamber a good cleaning. Turns out it was pretty dirty still. I’m hoping that this fixes the issues I had with it previously. I’ve still got some WWII surplus ammo for it around here so I’ll try and lug it to the range next time I’m out there.

Saiga 12: Last Chance?

Posted on May 21st, 2007 in Guns by Justin

SayUncle reports that there is a 19 round drum out for the Saiga 12 now and notes that this might render them classified as Destructive Devices by the ATF. It’s happened before with other shotguns.

I currently own a .410 Saiga and once owned the 20 gauge variant but I gave that away to a buddy. They’re nifty little weapons, and a pretty good value with them being, at least at the time I was buying them, $200 for the .410, $230 for the 20 gaue, and $300 for the 12 gauge.

If I had the cash on hand to buy the 12 gauge and one of those drums I’d be on that like white on rice.

TechMedica: They Changed Names

Posted on May 16th, 2007 in TechMedica, True Value Media, Xymetri by Justin

In my comments I’ve been seing claims that the company known as TechMedica has changed their name to “True Value Media”.

I thought such claims were out of line as nobody really had any proof other than that name being on the front of the building that TechMedica uses as their office. So, I checked it out.

First up, TechMedica’s picture from their own webpage::

Not too long ago in one of my more recent posts about TechMedica (April 18, 2007) I stated the following:

…I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that the building they picture on their website has been Photoshopped. The lettering on the signs with the company logo is too clean, too white, and is entirely off center.

That and when you zoom in you see that the letters are prefectly shaded — just as they would be if placed there via Photoshop.

This position was further justified when on this other post on TechMedica commenter “Billy Blumpkin” alerted me to the following picture (April 27, 2007) from the Xymetri company webpage:

Look familiar? Yes, they sell the same shit as TechMedica.

So, armed with a digital camera, and a little bit of time I ventured out with the girlfriend and took the following picture (April 28, 2007):

At this point I was still skeptical that TechMedica was trying to “rebrand” themselves as True Value Media. For one, the name was actually on the building, which lead me to believe that they were simply leasing space from another, likely legitimate, company in the area.

So, I refrained from associating the two together here on this blog because I didn’t want to drag a decent company into this.

Well, no reason to refrain from that practice any more!

TechMedica has indeed morphed, or attempted to morph into True Value Media.

Here’s a job posting for True Value Media.

Don’t Try It

Posted on May 14th, 2007 in Personal Life, Self Defense by Justin

I had a great time today. Through work I visited a 2nd grade classroom to start a 5 part basic introduction to business, money, communities, etc. It was really fun and I’m looking forward to coming back next week.

These kids are sharp! As I ran through a summary of the class I asked them what possible jobs one might find at a newspaper. Within 45 seconds they had listed: Journalist, Photographer, Editor, and Copy printer. It wasn’t much longer and they came up with delivery person. Dude! I didn’t even think of editor when I posed that question!

These kids are off the hook!

They’re smart, and they’re very, very precious individuals. It was amazing how you could start to see their personalities shine through just in that half hour I spent with them.

That said, I’m hoping that nobody tries this shit anywhere near me. I will not take kindly to it.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Staff members of an elementary school staged a fictitious gun attack on students during a class trip, telling them it was not a drill as the children cried and hid under tables.

During the last night of the trip, staff members convinced the 69 students that there was a gunman on the loose. They were told to lie on the floor or hide underneath tables and stay quiet. A teacher, disguised in a hooded sweat shirt, even pulled on a locked door.

That’s so disgusting that I’m unable to express my contempt.

Son of a bitch is lucky there weren’t any responsible adults around.

Prototype 7.62×25mm AR-15

Posted on May 9th, 2007 in Guns by Justin

Teppo Jutsu has one here. Scroll down a bit and you’ll see it.

I’m geeked about this idea. It seems to make a lot of sense. The 7.62×25mm round is a submachine gun round so it actually picks up velocity from the longer barrel, or at least should given the proper loading.

Further, since there aren’t any other mass produced carbines in 7.62×25mm (unlike the 9mm and other common pistol rounds) an AR upper woudl likely be the cheapest way to get into the market. If not the cheapest, at least the most bang for the buck.

No pun intended.

Let’s hope this works out for them.
