CZ RAMI .40S&W

Posted on July 1st, 2007 in Guns, Range Reports by Justin

I’ve been hauling the CZ RAMI in .40S&W out to the range the past two weekens. My routine is to start with the Walther P22, shoot at least 50 rounds through it, then shoot a mag through the RAMI. I then transition back and forth until I’ve had my fill.

This keeps me from developing any further trigger control issues.

I like CZ, and I like the RAMI, but I’ve had a few failures to feed on each recent outing. In both cases I was running 165 grain FMJ PMC ammo through it. The bullet profile on this stuff isn’t as flat as other rounds I’ve shot, so I don’t suspect that the issue is a rough feedramp. If it was it’d show up more often with the flat-nosed 180 grain stuff I’ve run through it in the past.

Instead I think there’s an issue with the recoil spring being too light. I’ve heard this before from folks that love the CZ line and my experience seems to confirm this. I purchased one of the earlier RAMIs to the hit the market so I suspect I’ll need to grab a Wolff replacement to make it run right.

I love CZ pistols, which shouldn’t be a big surprise to anybody that’s read this blog for a long time, but I must say: Aside from the CZ-100 the RAMI in .40S&W is probably the only other pistol I’d recommend folks not buy unless they’re sure they really want one. The difference there is that nobody should be buying the CZ-100. The RAMI in .40S&W at least shows some promise, and can be made to work right.

Walther P22

Here’s a thread with pictures on slide’s breaking.

I’m intested because I own one, and now that I’m trying to hone my pistol skills, or what there is of them, I’m shooting it a lot more.

Like, 750 rounds in the past two weekends, 500 of which went down range just this weekend.

It has issues, that’s for sure. It took a while to break in, failing to cycle occasionally when I’d shoot Remington bulk ammo through it. It works alright now but once it’s dirty it’s sluggish and occasionally needs an extra “tap” to get it into battery upon initial loading.

Further, with the 5″ target barrel I’ve found that the front weight will occasionally come loose and walk forward. It’s annoying, especially if you don’t bring an allen wrench to move it back into place. You shouldn’t need to bring tools to the range.

In hindsight I’d probably have been better off with a Ruger MKII. Still, I don’t plan on selling the Walther — it’s still a fun pistol and fills my needs, and should continue to do so provided the slide doesn’t break in half.

It Begins…

I’ve been meaning to get into reloading for a while now. Previously I didn’t have the space for it. That’s been remedied. The other issue is that I don’t know dick shit about reloading.

Think we found a solution to that.

I was over at an old high school buddy’s place yesterday when I mentioned that tomorrow as the CAS State shoot. My buddy’s dad caught that and we got to talking guns, which quickly went down the road to reloading. He’d just set up a new bench and was having a blast with it. No pun intended.

Soo.. we drove over to his place and he walked me throug loading up 9mm on a single stage press.

Next thing I know I’m off to Gander Mountain today buying 1800 round of CCI small pistol primers, 1000 CCI magnum pistol primers, 1lb of Unique and 9oz of Trail Boss.

I’ve known I’d have to start doing this for a while. I usually shoot cheap stuff like .223, 7.62×39mm, 9mm, .40S&W and .45ACP. Yes, you can reaload that stuff and save money but it’s not necessary. The .44Mag, .45LC, .357Mag, are another matter — they’re costly. Now, when you start talking 7.7Jap and 8×56mm, well, I’ve -got- to start loading my own if I want to every shoot those things.

Soo… there’s that.

Cowboy Action Shooting Observations

This weekend was the Michigan state champioship Cowboy Action Blackpowder competition.

Bonus: It was just down the road on my home range.

I’ve wanted to check out a CAS meet for a while, so this was an easy way to do that. I hit the range yesterday but missed all the action. Venturing onto the range I found a slew of trailers and RVs and various folks wandering around. I grabbed the attention of somebody that looked like he knew what was going on and he informed me that they usually shoot from 9am to 1pm.

Good to know.

So, I checked it out today. I ventured onto the field and stopped at the first stage I saw. I wasn’t there more than 5 minutes and already had three people approach me, inviting me to take a look, ask any questions, offer me hearing protection, explain some of the rules, where they usually shoot, what kind of guns you need, and that if you want to get into the sport you only need to show up with a smile. “There’s usually enough guns to go around” I was informed.

I also noticed I was about 20 years younger than anybody else shooting. I wasn’t surprised by that. What I was surprised by was that offhand I’d say 30-40% of the shooters were women. Cool.

I think it’s time to dump a couple of my guns and use that cash to buy someting suitable for CAS.

Annoyed

My internet connection has been a bit tempermental over the past few weeks. It’s starting ot really annoy the shit out of me. It’s on for an hour, out for 5 minutes, on for 8, etc. Totally random.

I went so far as to replace my cable modem today thinking that it just might have gotten too hot a few time and started having issues. No go. The problems are still there.

The only thing that I’m aware of having changed is Charter dropped a new cable line into my house. I suspect that’s the issue but I can’t really prove it, so I’ve opened a ticket when them and I’ll try replacing equipment inside the house until I’ve eliminated all the possible failure points.

This is really annoying, and it’s prohibited me from working at home today — the VPN won’t stay online long enough for me to get anything done.
