Geek Aid Michigan

September 11th, 2007

On September 15th I’ll be taking a recess from my duties in the triangle of death to participate in Geek Aid Michigan. The festivities will be located in Sparta, Michigan.

Proceeds from this year’s event, like last year, will go to support WMCAT, The West Michigan Center for Arts and Technology. It’s a good cause. Here’s their FAQ.

California’s Microstamping Law

September 10th, 2007

I’ve taken some time to look into the California law I mentioned earlier and while still horrible, it’s not as bad as I thought it would be.

First, some background. California has a handgun safety inspection routine that requires certification for ever pistol sold in California. Manufacturers must submit pistols for testing before they’re cleared for sale. The details of the test I’m not intimately familiar with but they include dropping the pistol from a certain height and ensuring that it won’t fire. I believe that later on the law was amended to include loaded chamber indicators and magazine disconnect safeties, but I’m fuzzy on just when that would have happened.

This new law, if signed by the governor, will include microstamping the make, model, and serial number of the gun that fired it onto the cartridge in at least two places.

Here’s where it gets interesting: Pistols that are on the approved list as of Dec 31, 2009 will still be available for sale after Jan 1, 2010 provided that they never “fall off” the list. How does a pistol fall off the list? Easy: The manufacturer forgets to pay the $200 annual re-listing fee. Using this handy tool we see that there are already 1,315 handguns certified for sale in California.

So, basically California won’t have any new semi-automatic handguns available come 2010 that aren’t already on the list provided everybody wants to keep ponying up the $200 per model to stay on the list that have already secured a spot. For S&W this means $56k in re-listing fees.

So, provided everybody pays their fees, California stays awash in pistols, right? Not quite.

The DOJ has the right to reexamine up to 5% of the pistols on the list for safety compliance every year. This is intended to give them a reason to de-list a pistol if the manufacturing technologies change but given the climate in California I wouldn’t be surprised if they start using this tool to drop pistols off the list eventually. Then again, considering that they haven’t yet used that tool to get rid of guns that don’t have a loaded chamber indicator or magazine disconnect safety, that might be my tin-foil hat membership showing.

What is really of interest to me is that you have to certify pistols of the exact same design if they differ in color of all things. If you follow the above link to the CA DOJ database and look at the Glock models approved in the state this become readily apparent: They explicitly list the OD (Olive Drab green) models because these idiots wrote the original law not accounting for different color variants.

So, come 2010 any manufacturer that wishes to change their manufacturing method, or even just the color of the gun’s finish, will be subjected to the new microstamping requirement. In time that will whittle away at the currently approved list until there’s nothing left, unless somebody kutows to this new law and tools up for the microstamping technology.

I doubt any of them will.

The end result of all this, the intended result, will be fewer options to legal gun owners in California, fewer sales, and fewer armed citizens.

NRA Suggestions

September 8th, 2007

Sebastion of Snowflakes in Hell has a post up asking for suggestions to improve the NRA. Post ‘em if you’ve got ‘em.

UPDATE: Uhh… changed the link so it points to the right post now.

Holy Shit!

September 7th, 2007

California’s legislature just banned semi-automatic handguns.

While that’s not the language of the law it will be the net effect if the governator signs it.

Fox News Poll Numbers

Seems that if you don’t like the returns then you can just start making shit up on the spot and ignore the numbers:

Oh No He Di-int!

Seems Chris Wallace felt the need to unleash is inner jackass last night.

Chris Wallace to Ron Paul: You’re basically saying we should take our marching orders from al-Quada? If they’re saying they want us off the Arabian Peninsula we should leave?

More Straw Poll Data

September 6th, 2007

You can find it here.

Interesting results. Most interesting was that conservatives predict Rudy Giuiliani to win the Republican nomination, but when asked how they would vote in a Hillary Clinton v. Rudy Giuiliani election:

Conservatives warn of an exodus should Giuliani face Clinton in the general election with 29% indicating they would abstain or vote for a third party — an increase of 4% from Grassfire’s May poll. Slightly less (25%) warned of an exodus in a Romney-Clinton general election.

I’m not sure what to make of that. Why would conservatives think that Giuiliani will get the nod when the same poll reports, in response to the question “If you plan on voting Republican and your party’s primary or caucus were held today, for whom would you vote? ” this is the result:

Fred Thompson 28%
Mitt Romney 14%
Ron Paul 13%
Newt Gingrich 12%
Rudy Giuliani 11%
Mike Huckabee 7%
Tom Tancredo 6%
John McCain 4%
Duncan Hunter 3%
Sam Brownback 2%

Something is wrong here. Why would a voting block think that the guy polling in the #5 position get the nomination? What does it say when said voting block will vote 3rd party if Rudy gets the nomination?

Are we that cynical? Seriously! Why is the conservative voting block predicting the absolute worst outcome for the Republican party in this election?

Personally, I voted that Thompson would get the nomination. I have four reasons for this:

1) He’s keeping his mouth shut. Until tonight he wasn’t officially a candidate. He’s going to let the other guys tear eachother apart as long as he can.
2) He can talk the talk. He knows what people want to hear, and he can deliver that.
3) He’s on TV. Folks recognize him.
4) His wife works well for photo opportunities:

Points 3 and 4 are what people are going to vote on. Points 1 and 2 are just strategy that’ll prevent him from saying anything that’ll muck things up. Yes, I consider the voting public that vapid.

Personally, I’m voting for Ron Paul. This shouldn’t surprise anybody. I don’t think he’s 100% fitted for the Executive role, but he’s the only guy on the Republican ticket that I can trust.

Texas Castle Doctrine Test Case?

September 5th, 2007

Musician Is Killed for Banging on a Door

The musician was up at 4am, locked out of his house by his girlfriend, and pounding on the door of the neighbor. Neighbor retrieves a pistol and shoots through the door striking the man in the head.

From the article:

Marsha McCartney, president of the North Texas chapter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, called Mr. Albrecht’s death “one more gun tragedy.”

“I’m sure the man who did the shooting feels terrible about it,” Ms. McCartney said, “but legally in Texas he can do exactly what he did because he feels frightened.

Emphasis mine.

I call bullshit. This man will, and should, go up in front of a grand jury for this. You can’t go shooting at people simply because you’re scared. There has to be a reasonable fear of your life or great bodily harm.

If this guy skates because the “Castile Doctrine” law that just went into effect legalizes this kind of behavior then the law should be amended.

Shooting through a door is a violation of Rule #4 of firearms handling:

RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET

Know what it is, what is in line with it, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything you have not positively identified. Be aware of your surroundings, whether on the range or in a fight. Do not assume anything. Know what you are doing.

Contrary to what The Culturologist thinks:

The World the Gun Fetishists Want
It’s a world where people shoot other people dead because they are knocking at the door at night.

This is not what I want. The FexEx and UPS guys have scared the shit out of me a couple o times but I have never had the desire to start blasting at them through the door.

How Civil

September 5th, 2007

The Culturologist has invented himself a new term.

What to call these impediments to human civilization?

I’m going to try out ‘gun fetishist.’

In the tried and true tradition of commodity fetishism, this would refer to the fact that so many gun-obsessed people seem to impute magical qualities to their inanimate yet greatly beloved chunks of metal and/or plastic, as primitive tribespeople attribute magical powers to their charms and totems and, unfortunately, as so many alienated Americans attribute such power to the things they purchase in the desperate hope of making their lives meaningful . It also gets at the erotic element of sexual fetishism–so many of the gunners talk about their guns the way sane people only talk about other human beings. There are rumors of gun fetishists who cannot get sexually excited unless they think of their guns.

This guy should be interesting for a while.
