Bulk Update

November 27th, 2007

The extended weekend put me a bit ouf of rythm, what little I have, when it comes to blog posting, so here’s a meta update:

It looks like Hornady is now offering their LEVERevolution ammo in .357 magnum and .44 magnum rounds. I like that. I’m not sure why exactly, but I like that. I suppose for me all it means is that they’re now tooled up to make .357 magnum bullets with the LEVERevolution tip in them and that might eventually result in some handloaders getting hold of them, and that might eventually result in some really interesting hunting rounds. To further confound you I don’t hunt, so I’m not sure why I’m interested in a new load for a .357 LEVERevolution round but some part of my inner geek just wants to see it happen because it could.

On the other hand I regard my .357 Marlin 1894C lever gun as a great carbine for home defense, but I consider it a 25-50 yard rifle because I’ve never felt I had any reason to take it out to the 150-200 yard range. Perhaps with proper ammo I could do that, and then the thing would turn into my “do all” rifle.

The whole Heller v. DC rhetoric is picking up across the blog world. The anti-gun crowd seems to be shitting their pants while the pro-gun crowd sits and wonder where we’re going next after this is ruled in our favor. Just today I read a piece (no link handy) by Mike Cox, Michigan’s own Attorney General, that argued strongly in favor of the individual rights model. I’m obviously biased, but it seems that anybody with a modicum of legal authority is predicting an indvidual rights outcome. Good. It’s about damned time.

I hit the local Dunham’s on Black Friday looking for some good gun deals. I was most interested in the WASR-2 that they had for $199. Unfortunately it was the single-stack version (10 rounds only) and it came with the thumbhole stock. That’s just not worth it to me.

Speaking of deals, I’ve noticed that local Meijer stations are kicking off some really good deals with regards to Remington ammo. It’s all about 33% off right now. I’m not sure why, though I do suspect that they’re trimming back the amount of gun stuff that they have in their stores. However the optimist in me just assumes it’s a deal to get hunters in the store during deer season. I hope for the later, but presume the former. I snagged about 55 round of #3 buck in 20 gauge this week because of the deal they had on it. That and I found out that I’m getting back my Saiga 20 gauge! Wooo!

I lent that thing out 3 years ago to a buddy and eventually assumed I’d never get it back. Well, he’s moving, he’s giving it back, and now I’m amped. I can’t wait to put some #3 buck through it and see what it does. I might replace my 870 for the Home Defense gun quite quickly.

Michigan’s Jan. 15 Primary Is On

November 21st, 2007

Here’s the story. The best part:

Michigan GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis said he is pleased the primary will be held and said Republicans will participate even if Democrats switch to a caucus.

Good.

Here We Go!

November 20th, 2007

The Supreme Court is going to hear the DC gun case.

This is only the 2nd time in our nation’s history that the Surpeme Court will address the 2nd amendment.

National Ammo Day

It’s National Ammo Day. So, you know, go buy some ammo.

Bonus: Some press coverage this year.

STI Group Buy

November 14th, 2007

On the news of STI giving California the finger (PDF) and announcing that they will no longer sell their pistols to any government agency in California, Larry Correia has announced a group buy deal for STI pistols.

If I had the cash on hand I’d be laying it down for the STI Spartan. The MSRP is $660, I see then on GunBroker.com for slightly less, and I wouldn’t doubt Larry could get you one for around $600, but don’t quote me on that number.

We now have our 2nd company refusing sales in California with the original being Barrett Rifles.

I’d like to see more of this: If a government will not allow a company to sell to its private citizens then that government agency should expect to be cut off from the gun manufacuterers.

Today’s Commute

November 13th, 2007

I know I’m kind of spoiled what with having a normal commute consisting of my bedroom to the kitchen, but today took a bit out of me:

5:00am: Get up
6:15am: Arrive in Holland, MI.
7:00am: Everybody is there, carpool over to Antioch, IL.
11:00am: Arrive at Antioch, IL.
2:00pm: Depart from Antioch, IL.
4:15pm: Arrive at Toyota dealership to pick up a Prius.

Okay, that one I have to explain. I’m working with these guys on some software for car dealership service centers. One of the guys works for a Toyota dealership in Muskegon and needed to grab a Prius from Benton Harbor to take to his dealership. So, they let me drive it from Benton Harbor to Holland where the 2nd guy took over for the last leg. I would never buy a Hybrid in today’s market (they cost too much for what they save in gas, and I don’t drive that much these days) but they’re fun to drive. It’s like a video-game where you get points for driving efficiently. It graphs all this shit out in 5 minute intervals as well as gives you a live reading of your fuel efficiency so you know when you’re doing things right. I managed to get 51mpg on the highway and in the last 5 minute leg of city driving I was right near 65mpg.

I got home around 6:30pm.

GOP punishes Michigan for early primary

WASHINGTON — The Republican Party announced Thursday that it will punish five states, including Michigan, for scheduling early nominating contests.

New Hampshire, Florida, South Carolina and Wyoming will also lose half of their delegates to the national convention, said Mike Duncan, chairman of the Republican National Committee.

RNC rules require the punishment for states that hold their nominating contests earlier than Feb. 5

Is anything going right in this state lately?

This is depressing.

Quote of the Day

November 8th, 2007

Larry Correia:

Hillary vs. Rudy? Whoever wins, we lose. Just like the slogan for the new Alien vs. Predator movie, only instead of a gooey opportunistic parasite vs. a ruthless sadistic brute, we get a… oh, hell… never mind.

Some Folks Love to Hate

November 7th, 2007

Les Jones brings us commentary on the private fire services employed in California recently. In short: Some folks don’t like other folks being able to pay for private services to protect their home.

I wish I could read something like that and be aghast, but I just can’t. I’ve become too acclimated to seeing such nonsense for it to actually disturb me. It bothers me, but it registers about as high as a bad driver on the roads these days. Some folks just get get pissy when you protect your property with your own money. They think they’re entitled to your money to protect their property too.
