Is That Your Final Answer?

February 9th, 2008

In an email I received from Ron Paul today:

But with so many primaries and caucuses now over, we do not now need so big a national campaign staff, and so I am making it leaner and tighter. Of course, I am committed to fighting for our ideas within the Republican party, so there will be no third party run. I do not denigrate third parties — just the opposite, and I have long worked to remove the ballot-access restrictions on them. But I am a Republican, and I will remain a Republican.

Emphasis mine.

Looks like Ron Paul won’t be running on a 3rd party ticket.

Bruce sums up my thoughts on the matter.

Gun free zones don’t protect anybody from violence.

Red’s Trading Post Update

February 8th, 2008

On Jan. 25 Ryan posted that the judge in their case dismissed the BATFE’s request for summary judgement so it will now go to trial.

That’s good news.

On Feb. 6 Ryan posted that the BATFE had sent more agent to his store for yet another audit.

Looking for a picture for this post, I could relate to an ATF punching bag right now. Right on the heels of the Judge denying the ATF’s request for Summary Judgment, Area Supervisor Linda Young and 2 Investigators came in, in an attempt to attain more violations yesterday. The Judge initially allowed them to conduct inspections to appease the ATF’s concerns that we would place the publics safety in jeopardy. The ATF and has since used this as an opportunity to build their case against us. Scrutinizing everything and continuing to make remarks like, “I am going to have to put this in my report”.

Their intentions were not to bring us into compliance as they have claimed in the past but it was to specifically try and drum up violations in an attempt to paint us in a bad light before the Judge.

Looks like Ryan’s got their panties in a bunch.

Boberg XR9

February 7th, 2008

Ahab brings us the Boberg XR9 from the 2008 SHOT Show.

Very interesting. The feeding mechanism is like no other current production semi-auto pistol that I know of. Check the link for a diagram.

The first thing I noticed is that there’s no feed ramp on the barrel, or even the frame. The extractor, during recoil, slips down, grabs the next cartridge out of the magazine, pulls back, lifts up, and brings the cartridge straight into the chamber. This allows for a bit more barrel length as the magazine sits directly below the rear of the barrel instead of slightly behind it. You’re basically looking at another full inch of barrel compared to a more conventional design. That means a 9mm pistol that’s nearly the same size as Glock 26 with a 4″ barrel.

I like the idea.

I have no idea how well it works, but it sure is interesting.

Looks like a clone of the Kel-Tec P3AT to me too.

The Current Candidates

February 1st, 2008

The Republican field of candidates are down to four at this point: Paul, Huckabee, Romney, and McCain.

If you take Paul off that list I honestly don’t know who I should support.

Huckabee is good on the gun thing, but the reason that the gun thing works for me as a litmus test is because most of the time that indicates the candidate is all for personal choice and individual liberty. Huckabee is a populist, not a conservative. The only reason he takes any conservative views is because he thinks that’s what the people and and that is what will get him elected. Being right on the issue of guns is a side effect of that position, not a natural extension of his philosophy. I don’t like that.

McCain isn’t much better but I do get the feeling from him that he’s genuine in what he advocates for. He’s not just making shit up to get elected. Kudos for that, or at least making me think you’re genuine, but that won’t win my vote. If it did then I might as well vote for Obama. They look about equal in my eyes.

Romney has the successful businessman thing going for him, but I don’t think that translates perfectly into government. I’d feel much better about getting behind him if he were advocating for strong civil liberties and lower taxes, but he’s not doing that. All he’s doing is trying to make himself look better at economics than McCain.

Paul, I think, will end up running as a 3rd party. He’s been saving his money for this unless he’s created a massive ad campaign that’ll be launched before Super Tuesday. I don’t think he has. I have mixed feelings on this, but in the end I think it’s needed. McCain and Romney are basically Democrat-lite candidates trying to sucker in Republicans. A 3rd party run by Paul would give the Republican party some pretty clear numbers on just how many of their ilk are tried of rampant spending and shitting on civil liberties.

New 30-30?

February 1st, 2008

I hear that Mossberg is going to launch a lever-action top-ejecting 30-30 soon. That’ll sorta fill the void left with Winchester’s 1984 in 30-30 being dropped last year. I figure they’re going to have to price it at least $50 less than the Marlin 336 to gain any traction in the market. I wish them the best of luck.
