Hi-Point .45ACP Carbine

April 24th, 2008

Rumor has it that there’s now 10 units in the prototype stage with retail sales starting December 2008 or January 2009.

Cool! I don’t really want one, but it’s nice to see a company offer up a product that folks have been asking for for some time.

Into the Wild

April 23rd, 2008

We watch Into the Wild tonight based on the recommendation of a friend of mine.

Good flick, but I came away thinking two things:

1) Hippies do suck.
2) What a twat!

Spoilers (and me being an ass) below:

Long story short, kid from a well off family goes to Emory, graduates, and because he’s pissed at his parents for living in an unhappy marriage skips town and sends his life savings off to charity. He then prances around the west side of the US for a about a year, never sends a letter home to his family letting them know he’s still alive, then heads to Alaska for his big adventure.

He dies of starvation up there at the age of 24 and some hunters find his corpse a couple weeks after he dies.

Nice work, dipshit. You tormented your family for 2 solid years and ended up killing yourself for what? A hundred odd days in the wilderness? Let’s just take a look at the WikiPediapage on him to find more idiocy:

In April 1992 McCandless hitchhiked to Fairbanks, Alaska. He was last seen alive by James Gallien, who gave him a ride from Fairbanks to the Stampede Trail. Gallien was concerned about “Alex”, who had minimal supplies (not even a magnetic compass) and no experience of surviving in the Alaskan bush. Gallien repeatedly tried to persuade Alex to defer his trip, and even offered to drive him to Anchorage to buy suitable equipment and supplies. However, McCandless ignored Gallien’s warnings, refusing all assistance except for a pair of rubber boots, two tuna melts, and a bag of corn chips.

Hippies are stupid.

Yeah, you can survive off nature up there — if you know what you’re doing. When a local says you’re totally unprepared for this you should probably take notice. The people that do survive off the land have knowledge passed down to them from previous generations. You need a little more than a couple of books to figure this shit out. Some practice probably wouldn’t hurt either, like maybe working in town for 2 months, collecting info, then camping out on your own for a week. Repeat that a few times until you’ve got it down and know what to do during each season to stay the fuck alive.

More:

Because he chose not to buy a map and a compass (items which most people in the same situation would have considered essential)

Yeah, those are pretty fucking important, especially the compass. I own one, military surplus I think. It cost me $7.

McCandless was completely unaware that a hand-operated tram crossed the impassable river ¼ mile from where he attempted to cross. Had McCandless known this, he could easily have saved his own life.

Yeah, that map would have been handy. I buy maps like that when I go off the beaten path (ie: My trip to Montana in 2006) even though I’m in a damned Jeep with enough food and water to keep my ass alive for weeks. Then again, I’m not a fucking hippie.

Additionally, there were cabins stocked with emergency supplies within a few miles of the bus, although they had been vandalized and all the supplies were spoiled, possibly by McCandless, as detailed in Lamothe’s documentary.

So, actually, Nature Boy wasn’t really all that far out from civilization. At least, not by Alaskan standards.

Alaskan Park Ranger Peter Christian wrote: “I am exposed continually to what I will call the ‘McCandless Phenomenon.’ People, nearly always young men, come to Alaska to challenge themselves against an unforgiving wilderness landscape where convenience of access and possibility of rescue are practically nonexistent […] When you consider McCandless from my perspective, you quickly see that what he did wasn’t even particularly daring, just stupid, tragic, and inconsiderate. First off, he spent very little time learning how to actually live in the wild. He arrived at the Stampede Trail without even a map of the area. If he [had] had a good map he could have walked out of his predicament […] Essentially, Chris McCandless committed suicide.”

Emphasis mine. That pretty much sums up his adventure right there.

I’m not saying I could do it. Far from it. I’ve been known to get myself into a pickle or two in my life when left alone, but I’m smart enough to know that I shouldn’t try some shit like that.

I’m Certified!

I passed Exam 70-445 (TS: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence – Implementation and Maintenance) this afternoon. Right now there’s only about 1100 people that have passed it.

Meta Update

April 21st, 2008

Ryan Horsley says that Glock Magazines are going up 40% as of May 1st. I haven’t seen this anywhere else, so I’m not really sure it’s entirely true. I’m not saying Ryan’s a liar, just saying that it might be an isolated incident.

Jed notes that the World Beer Cup Winners have been announced for 2008. I only see one winner from Michigan. Bummer. There’s some good beers coming out of here.

Chris Bryne writes about IPSC, IDPA and the doubletap. Good read and certainly shows the difference between game shooting and self defense shooting.

On a personal note we got the garage all cleaned out this weekend and I snagged a riding lawn mower from a buddy. The lawn mower was transported to the local True Value hardware store for repair and I have no idea how much they’re going to want to make it run right again. I figure anything south of $300 will be a deal.

5.45x39mm

April 15th, 2008

AIM Surplus has 5.45x39mm ammo on sale for $120 per 1080 rounds right now. It’s been that way for a while but I hear the wholesale price jumped up north of that recently so I’m not sure how much longer that deal will last.

When you compare this to any 5.56/.223 stuff on the market that’s less than 1/3rd the cost.

Now, seeing as how S&W is going to release a 5.45x39mm upper soon for $600 it’s really tempting to stock away 3-4 cases of the stuff and just dump my 5.56 upper for a few years. Well, it would be if I shot that much. Unfortunately I don’t, but it’s still tempting.

I’m sort of kicking myself for not buying that single-stack WASR-2 that the local Dunham’s had on sale for $200 back on Black Friday. Then I’d have a reason to stow away to cases right now.

Still, if you’re thinking about getting an AK or AR right now I’d lean heavily toward 5.45 and load up on it pronto.

That’s rather… queer.

Somebody alerted Marko to some marketing material put out by Dr. Ignatius Piazza of the Front Sight Firearms Training Institute that was plagiarizing some of Marko’s writing.

They attribute the writing to the wrong person (not the first time it’s happened with that piece) but they also omit one single word from the essay: gay.

Just another reason for me to cringe a bit when I see Piazza’s name.

Screw Wal-Mart

April 14th, 2008

Wal-Mart is going to start videotaping all gun transactions.

I don’t see this doing any good at all. You’ve already got to see a photo ID when buying the gun. They record the ID number off your driver’s license or state ID card at the time of purchase, they have your name, address, height, weight, place of birth, etc. all on file.

Sorry, guys, but I can buy my goods elsewhere.

A Good Weekend

April 14th, 2008

Theresa and I spent a 3-day weekend up in Traverse City, MI this weekend. It was nice.

It’s what we do instead of trying to find gifts for each other on our birthdays. They’re only 8 days apart, so a small trip works out pretty well. It’s twice that we’ve done this and it’s twice that we’ve gone to Traverse City. Nice town, plenty of places to eat, and given that we do this in early April it’s pretty cheap. This year we got a room right on the bay with a nice view, in-room jacuzzi, and plenty of space for about $80 a night.

For a quick 3 day trip cats aren’t a big deal. Just leave them a big pile of food and plenty of fresh water. We’ve got a 100oz fountain that keeps their water from feeling stale. The dog on the other hand is another matter. You can’t leave a dog alone for a whole day, let alone 3 days. So, my youngest brother house sat for us again. We sure do appreciate it when he does that.

Ruger SP9 Recall

April 11th, 2008

Details here. Short story: They can fire when dropped with the manual safety off. That’s not good.

Heh.

TALES OF THE GUNSTORE! Darwin Awards in the making.Oh, man. Larry gets some good ones:

They say that they’re going to need hundreds of pounds of it, and they need it today. I tell them that most places don’t stock that much on hand, and I then asked what they were doing.

Well… it turns out that they just built a cannon. It had a 2″ bore. They told me that they were going to go shoot it today, and that since they needed 1/2 pound of blackpowder, PER SHOT, that it would add up pretty quick.

You know that sound that a record makes when it skips. Yeah, I heard that noise in my brain.

Read the whole thing. It’s worth it.
