Odd Moments at Home

May 19th, 2008

Okay, so I work from home most of the time. It’s something I never thought I’d like but it’s grown on me.

Today I’m plugging away and suddenly Chuck Norris goes ape. Sure enough, there’s somebody here. A big ‘ole red truck in the driveway. Toss the dog into his crate and answer the door.

Man at Door: “Hi… I’m doing a roofing job for an old lady (truck has “roofing” written on it, makes sense) ’round here and she’s been having trouble picking out a color. I’ve showed her samples and such but that didn’t work. So, I’ve been driving her around to see real houses and she likes what you’ve got. Do you know what color that is or where it’s from?”

Me: (having a WTF moment) “Uh, nope. I bought the place a year and a half ago and the roof came with the house. I don’t have a clue.”

MD: “Do you mind if I get out ladder, climb up there and get a closer look? Take some pictures?”

Me: “Uh, sure, go right ahead.”

Hopefully that’ll be the strangest thing to happen ’round here for a good month or so.

I R MORON

May 19th, 2008

Damnit. I sling up my first post in almost a week and I mention that nobody booed McCain’s speech.

Two minutes later this pops up in my RSS reader:

Over the years, I haven’t agreed with the NRA on every issue. I have supported efforts to have NICS background checks apply to gun sales at gun shows. I recognize that gun shows are enjoyed by millions of law-abiding Americans. I do not support efforts by those who seek to regulate them out of existence. But I believe an accurate, fair and instant background check at guns shows is a reasonable requirement. I also oppose efforts to require federal regulation of all private sales such as the transfer between a father and son or husband and wife. I supported campaign finance reform because I strongly believed our system of financing campaigns was influencing elected officials to put the interests of “soft money” donors ahead of the public interest.

It was at this point, early in his speech, that a slow but steady trickle of people started leaving the venue. He had lost our interest. John McCain’s determination to do away with the private sale of firearms is unacceptable. Yes David, no one booed. Honestly now, would you have? This was not a crowd of liberal college students bent on making a disturbance, but a crowd of good and decent Americans. They offered up polite applause and stood when he was done. They clapped again when he came back on stage, it was the polite thing to do.

Emphasis mine, just to draw your attention to it.

Yeah, that was definitely the polite and mature way to handle it.

2008 NRA Convention Round-Up

May 19th, 2008

Sqeaky has some photos of those there.

John Snow was badgered by Michael Bane long enough to make him wander over to the Bushmaster booth and see their prototype AR in .338 Lapua He says a version in .416 Rigby is also in the works. I suspect we’ll see a Remington branded version in a year or two.

Speaking of Remington, they announced their R-25 line recently. It’s an AR-10 done up in camo for the hunting crowd chambered in .308, .243, and 7mm-08.

Don’t room with SayUncle: he might make you blog from the bathroom.

Caleb has a 63 second teaser trailer up as well as some gun porn. The forend mounted Taser on a Taser shotgun seems a bit odd to me too. Seems like a rubber bayonet would be more fitting.

McCain gave a speech, and like David Codrea I wonder: And not one person “Booed”? Seriously? They guy calls for an end to private transfer of guns at an NRA convention and he gets a standing ovation? Ugh.

I hope I can make it there next year.
