It was Joe Biden, our VP elect who introduced the "Assault Weapons Ban Renewal Act of 2007" (S.2237). H.R. 1022 had 67 co-sponsors. The Republicans even introduced an AWB, H.R. 6257.

Obama's transition platform states:

"Address Gun Violence in Cities: As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn’t have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets."

So yes, I do fully expect an AWB, or two, to be introduced early in '09. I expect the more restrictive legislation to receive the full support of Pelosi and Co. and be cosponsored by at least all 67 cosponsors of H.R. 1022.

The President and the VP will both actively support this bill and it will make it to the floor for a vote. Where it goes from there is up in the air.

I’m not really shopping for myself. I’m set. What I’ll be doing is buying a few spares to quietly pass down to my kids.
I made it my goal shortly after my "gun nut" bit flipped that I'd have enough guns to arm my grand children.

Odd, because I didn't even have any children back then. I still don't.

Still, provided that we have 3 children, and they each have 3 more, everybody will have a rifle and a pistol and I've still got extras beyond that. Most would still have a shotgun of some kind.

I think you may be underestimating the sense of entitlement that goes along with something like winning the presidency...especially among those who's entire existence revolves around the insatiable thirst for power.

At any rate, is it worth taking the chance? With Democrat majorities in both houses, something like an AWB could happen very quickly and without much public comment or notice...and this time without an expiration date.

I, for one, don't want to blow the possibility off and then be left out in the cold. I'm going gun shopping today. I hope its not too late.

I have a feeling they're going to need them.
