We recently got my wife a 2006 Honda CR-V. We were looking at Suburu Foresters but decided on the "Serve" instead. It's a great car, very quick considering it's only 2.4L four-banger, good mileage, great handling, all in all no complaints.

I swear by my Audi, and if you pull one from '99-'00, should fit your price range.

That being said, Subaru's are excellent vechicles as well, and given what I've experienced, I can reccomend a Forrester.
