Crashed

November 29th, 2009

We took our dogs out to a nice open field with a couple of ponds in it today so they could run off some energy. They ran hard for a good 45 minutes and were pooped.

When we got home Chuck was limping pretty bad which isn’t uncommon for him after a workout. It’s a bit unsettling, and he’s seeing the vet on Friday where the issue will be brought up. But, until then, I figured I’d play Doggie Doctor and started feeling around his hips to see if anything was out of whack. I also gave him a little massage while I was at it. Part of it was just poking around trying to provoke a response out of him, you know, to see if anything really hurt.

After a couple minutes I thought I heard him growl or moan in pain. A few seconds later I realized what the sound was: snoring.

Little guy went from full alert to dead snoring in about 2 minutes flat. Cracks me up.

Handload Bleg

November 16th, 2009

I’ve had some thoughts kicking around in my head for a while but can’t seem to turn up much on my own. So, looking to see if others know anything about this.

1) Looking to find frangible 00 Buck pellets for reloading. Not already loaded shells. Those things are freaking expensive.

2) I know Mas Ayoob says a prosecutor can make your life hell if you use handloads in a self defense shooting but I’ve always seen that discussion center around handloaded pistol ammunition. Is it pretty much universal?

I’d like to get into reloading my own 00 Buck shells for practice and started to think that if I could get a frangible load going I could possibly use them for steel plate shoots if the event organizer is OK with it. That and if I actually liked how they performed maybe I’d keep some handy for home defense use. In my mind it’d be incredibly difficult for a prosecutor to paint somebody as an evil villain out for blood when the shooting is in your own home and you’re using a common 12 gauge shotgun regardless of what it’s loaded with. Granted, I don’t understand how that gains any traction with juries with regards to pistols either, but I have a handle on the topic. They don’t.

Thoughts?

Investing

Step 1) Go to a casino.
Step 2) Sit at a black jack table.
Step 3) With my brother.

Cripes, if that dude gets any luckier they’re going to plaster his face on a box of Lucky Charms.

Missing Information

November 13th, 2009

A local liquor store got held up not far from where I live. Nothing new there, it happens on occasion. Here’s what raised my eyebrows:

Witnesses said he was an average weight and height, wearing black clothing and had short black hair. He was 20 to 30 years old.

I don’t recall exactly how long it’s been happening, perhaps 9 months, but the local press never seems to print the complexion of a suspect when giving the description.

One Ounce Loads

November 13th, 2009

So, the other week I went and picked up some new wads for shotgun reloading. I figured I’d try something new and grabbed some that would let me reload some 1oz loads. Your average box of store bought target ammo is going to be pushing 1 1/8th oz loads.

They work. I can miss clays with them just like the 1 1/8th oz loads. So, that’s good.

What was funny is when I reached into my shell pouch yesterday and found a shell that hadn’t kept its crimp. I reached into another pocket and grabbed a 3 dram equivalent 1 1/8th oz load factory shell to replace it.

Gave me a nice reminder as to why some folks get turned off the recoil of a 12 gauge early on. Factory loads kinda beat you up a bit. I had forgotten that.

Do Not Want

November 13th, 2009

Walther has patented a mechanism to prevent a pistol from being disassembled while there’s a round in the chamber which raises the question: Which moronic government agency in the world asked for such a brain dead idea?

Today in History

Known terrorist and Ringo Starr look-alike Yasser Arafat died 5 years ago today.

It’s the little things in life that keep me going, folks.

Call of Duty: World at War

November 1st, 2009

I picked up this game for the XBOX 360 a while ago. It’s fun, though I admit I only play in multi-player mode with friends and random folks online.

On the surface it’s right up my alley what with it being a game centered around WWII and consequently the guns that were in play at the time.

The problem is, at least in multi-player mode, reality takes a second seat to fairness. It doesn’t matter what country you’re playing for, you all get the same weapons. Yep, Nazis and Soviets running around with Garands.

In addition they intentionally ignore actual ballistics and just make it up as they go. The Garand and Springfield 1903 both fire the 30’06 cartridge, but the game gives the 1903 more power just because it’s a bolt-action rifle and therefore harder to make hits with. Such inconsistencies are all over the place with regards to the weapons. I find it horribly annoying as it forces me to check my brain at the door and ignore everything I know about actual WWII weapons when I play.

It’s fun, I just wish it was a little more consistent with reality is all.
