I picked up this game for the XBOX 360 a while ago. It’s fun, though I admit I only play in multi-player mode with friends and random folks online.
On the surface it’s right up my alley what with it being a game centered around WWII and consequently the guns that were in play at the time.
The problem is, at least in multi-player mode, reality takes a second seat to fairness. It doesn’t matter what country you’re playing for, you all get the same weapons. Yep, Nazis and Soviets running around with Garands.
In addition they intentionally ignore actual ballistics and just make it up as they go. The Garand and Springfield 1903 both fire the 30’06 cartridge, but the game gives the 1903 more power just because it’s a bolt-action rifle and therefore harder to make hits with. Such inconsistencies are all over the place with regards to the weapons. I find it horribly annoying as it forces me to check my brain at the door and ignore everything I know about actual WWII weapons when I play.
It’s fun, I just wish it was a little more consistent with reality is all.
If you want to get technical.. The velocity according to http://www.miltecharms.com/rifles.htm says that the round travels faster out of the Springfield. I’m guessing it’s because the bolt action saves all the gas for the bullet, where as the Garand uses some of the gas to eject and chamber. It appears that the Springfield also has a greater max effective range (+100 yards). I know it’s not THAT much of a difference, but I thought I’d try to make the game more playable for you. :)
