Bullseye

December 7th, 2009

So, I went and shot a bullseye match at Tulip City Rod & Gun Club this evening with a few guys from Off A Lot.

Yeah, that’s not something I’m any good at. I took my CZ-75B in 9mm out there which is certainly capable of some degree of accuracy, though you wouldn’t know it looking at my targets. I didn’t even hit paper half the time.

Before tonight I might have maybe fired 50 rounds in my entire life with one hand. I need a lot more practice there.

Clays

December 7th, 2009

Headed out to Seaway with the gang Saturday morning for out monthly sporting clays outing. It’s been a while since I was able to make one.

It showed.

I shot five stand for the first time in my life. It didn’t go well. I might as well have just run around my back yard shooting a shotgun into the air decked out in my underwear. All I did on that course was make noise and get cold in the process.

Sporting clays didn’t really go any better but it was still fun. First time shooting a shotgun with gloves on too. A bit awkward shoving a shell into a tube magazine with gloves on.

Newbie Gun Criteria

December 1st, 2009

So, I’ve kinda been tasked with picking out a gun for a novice shooter. As in, has practically zero experience with handguns. It’s just a handgun to keep handy while traveling the US in a motor home. I’m posting this to see if I’ve missed anything that meets the following criteria:

1) Semi-automatic: Their choice, not going to try and talk them into a revolver either. I don’t much care for them myself.

2) Manual safety: They’re not comfortable with the idea of a gun that doesn’t have one. Not going to argue on that one either.

3) Legal in all 50 states (eg: no more than 10 round capacity): This is something I brought up. Said person will be traveling with it and doesn’t need to end up a felon because they decided to drive into California with a 15 round magazine for a CZ-75B.

4) Full-sized or reasonably large sized pistols only: No pocket rockets, this is a novice shooter we’re talking about.

The only thing that comes to mind is a 1911 of some kind, probably either a Government or Commander sized one with a heavy steel frame to make for more comfortable range sessions.

Am I missing any other good options?
