AK day

A few weeks back a helped a buddy of mine pick out an AK variant at a gun show. He was intent on getting a folder of some kind and settled for a piece built up from an M70 Yugo parts kit. I’m honestly not even sure who the builder was.

Anyway, we took it out today along with my Egyptian MAADI and my AR-15. Not much exciting happened unless you want to count me not even hitting the target with either AK at 50 and 100 yards. It’s been about two years since I’ve gotten behind a rifle and it shows. Funny thing is I was fine with the AR. And by “fine” I mean I managed to keep everything in an 8″ circle at 100 yards. That’s about what I’d expect out of me. Seriously, for a gun nut, I’m a pretty crappy shot.

But couldn’t hit anything with either AK. Go figure.

  1. Haven’t a clue, I’ve never shot an AK.

But I did pick up a cheapish Savage Mk II and am rediscovering the fun of shooting something for which 100 rounds cost about $7 or so.

I know what I was doing wrong with the AK. Too much focusing on the rear sight and not letting it blur out. It’s natural to do that with the AR — not so much with the AK especially when you’re bouncing between the two.

What I didn’t mention in my post is that I finally did get my Marlin 56 Levermatic out to the range. And, yes, shooting some cheap .22LR was a whole lot of fun.

I’m going to have to remind myself to get to the rifle range more often. It can be quite relaxing. And I’ve got a “new” .22 to get dialed in.

I’ve been shoot’n skeet lately, definitly new to me. That has been a humbling experiance for as much as i shoot. It’s close and quick and angled…..
