Cowboy Action Shooting Observations

July 1st, 2007

This weekend was the Michigan state champioship Cowboy Action Blackpowder competition.

Bonus: It was just down the road on my home range.

I’ve wanted to check out a CAS meet for a while, so this was an easy way to do that. I hit the range yesterday but missed all the action. Venturing onto the range I found a slew of trailers and RVs and various folks wandering around. I grabbed the attention of somebody that looked like he knew what was going on and he informed me that they usually shoot from 9am to 1pm.

Good to know.

So, I checked it out today. I ventured onto the field and stopped at the first stage I saw. I wasn’t there more than 5 minutes and already had three people approach me, inviting me to take a look, ask any questions, offer me hearing protection, explain some of the rules, where they usually shoot, what kind of guns you need, and that if you want to get into the sport you only need to show up with a smile. “There’s usually enough guns to go around” I was informed.

I also noticed I was about 20 years younger than anybody else shooting. I wasn’t surprised by that. What I was surprised by was that offhand I’d say 30-40% of the shooters were women. Cool.

I think it’s time to dump a couple of my guns and use that cash to buy someting suitable for CAS.
